“What is it?” That would likely be the first question. “What does it taste like?” Presumably, the following question about a food hybrid – the combination of two concepts to make something incredible and brand new.
Many times, as children, we may have created a hybrid, or two, that we could not conceive would be a phenomenon among the masses, but were mishmashes that simply tasted good to us.
The invention of the Cronut® in 2013 caused dessert-lovers everywhere to become paralyzed with ravenous captivation over the blend of two extremely popular pastry staples – the beloved American doughnut and French-rooted croissant.
And though explorative, adventurous, and imaginative minds have been creating food marriages for centuries.
So far we’ve enjoyed delicacies such as the:
Duffin doughnut + muffin
Brookie cookie +brownie
Donnoli doughnut + cannoli
Crogel croissant + bagel
Doughscuit doughnut + biscuit
Cruffin croissant + muffin
Crepe cake layered crepes + filling
Cherpumple cherry + pumpkin + apple pie cooked inside cake
It's all about the web
The world loves food hybrids because they look good on Instagram and everybody likes posting pictures of their food on Instagram.
Here some new hybrids to watch in 2021 and beyond:
• Pancake Cereal
• Mac and Cheese Burger Bun
• Churro Ice Cream Sandwich
But this trend also includes combining flavors from different parts of the world, like enchilada dumplings and French onion soup, a play-off of traditional xiaolong bao soup dumplings. There was even a burger-dumpling hybrid created by Chinese Club in Brooklyn, NY, called the Momo Burger, which featured chicken meatball-stuffed dumplings topped with mayo, lettuce, and cheese sandwiched between burger buns.
And ingredients are not exempted from the trend. Kale is still huge in the wellness scene and its popularity has stemmed popular hybrids with veggies like rabe and brussel sprouts to create “brusselkale” or kalette.
Celtuce is a Chinese vegetable that combines the flavors of lettuce with others akin to asparagus or celery that grows with a thick stem like a broccoli’s stalk and used in dishes to give texture and crunch. There’s also the mesmerizing Broccoflower broccoli-cauliflower hybrid that has taken every Instagram foodie account by storm with its unique light green spirals, and komatsuna described as a mustard-spinach hybrid popularly used in Japanese cuisine.
